Where acid-resistant bricks fit
Acid-resistant bricks are dense, fired ceramic units used where a floor, wall or process lining may face a defined corrosive liquid, acid fumes or industrial effluent. An Indian specification for acid-resistant bricks lists acid-exposed flooring, masonry, chemical-plant chambers and towers, and sewers carrying industrial effluent among intended applications. That makes these linings relevant to selected power-plant chemical-treatment and emissions-control areas, as well as chemical-plant process zones, when the service conditions are understood.
A brick lining protects an exposed surface; it is not a substitute for a complete containment design. Establish whether contact is continuous, intermittent, splash-based or vapour-only. Record the chemical name, concentration, temperature, operating cycle, expected abrasion, and whether cleaning or steam could change the exposure.
Chemical compatibility starts with the medium
Acid-resistant does not mean resistant to every chemical. High-silica, low-porosity acid-proof brick or tile can resist most acids, but a CDC technical review identifies hydrofluoric acid as a key exception because it attacks silica. The review also explains that higher temperatures accelerate chemical attack.
Do not specify acid-resistant ceramic brick for hydrofluoric-acid exposure without a chemical-compatibility review and a system specifically suited to that duty. Alkaline solutions and any hot, concentrated acid service also need case-specific review. Relevant test evidence should match the actual chemical, concentration, temperature, duration and substrate.
The lining system includes the joints
The brick face is only one element. The CDC review notes that mortar joints can provide a path for penetration even where the brick itself is impervious. Joint material, backing or membrane, movement details, drainage, and terminations at penetrations therefore require coordinated design.
Select the mortar and joint system for the exposure rather than assuming that a general tile adhesive will act as a chemical-resistant mortar. Verify substrate condition, curing, joint geometry, coverage and installation sequence against the relevant technical literature and the qualified installer's method.
Use standards in the right context
Standards are regional design and test references, not a universal promise of product compliance. IS 4860 is an Indian standard for acid-resistant bricks and illustrates a test-led approach through requirements for water absorption, strength and acid resistance. A result for one defined test condition does not establish suitability for every process duty.
EN 12004 applies in Europe to ceramic tile adhesives. It sets requirements and classification for adhesive products; it is not a tactile-tile certification and does not itself certify an acid-resistant brick system. For New Zealand work, do not assume that an Australian standard automatically governs the project. Confirm the applicable New Zealand Building Code pathway, project requirements and authority review. Product compliance requires applicable testing and installation review.
Information to prepare before selection
Before procurement, define the duty and request evidence relevant to it. Review individual brick properties and the test method, then review the complete lining assembly and installation method. Consider chemical resistance alongside slip needs, drainage, traffic loads, thermal movement and repair access when those factors apply.
For a TactiSenses enquiry, provide the chemical schedule, concentration range, temperature, exposure pattern, drawing details and substrate information. The owner's engineer or another qualified designer should confirm the final chemical-resistance system for the specific plant area.
